GSS Parent Handbook

We are pleased that you are giving your child the opportunity to learn in the Gibson School Systems. We strongly believe that the family and school must work together to make sure each student reaches his or her academic potential and behavioral best.

It is important that you and your child understand the aims, goals, and regulations of the Gibson School System.  We encourage families to take an active role in the education of their children and in the functioning of the school. It is for this reason that we welcome your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions at any time.

Please carefully read this handbook so you can follow and support all school policies for the best possible education of your child. Discuss each point with your student at home as well. We look forward to the next school year and all the school years to come!

  1. A) Students must never be absent unless they are seriously sick. When a student does return to school after an absence, he or she either needs to bring a letter from the doctor and submit it to the homeroom teacher in order to be readmitted to school. At the KG level, direct contact with the teacher is acceptable.
  1. B) Students who will take the national examination: grades 8 and 12 are not allowed to be absent from any program without a letter from the doctor. We will issue zero results for model exams if absences are found in these grade level. A referral paper will also be issued. Attendance is a serious issue!
  1. C) No extended leave will be given or granted during the school year for vacation or other programs.

The GSS system includes students receiving frequent worksheets which complement and support the textbooks. These worksheets are sent online to parents’ email addresses. The worksheets should remain a part of the continuing   process. Our system also includes bi-weekly testing programs. Beginning in the primary level, all tests are also fastened into the exercise books so they can be used later as a study source.

The Gibson School System offers a four week Vacation Enrichment Program for students who need support or whose families want to keep them active and stimulated during the vacation time (kerempt).   Grade 8 and 12 students are required to attend this program as a Ministry of Education examination preparation tool by beginning the curriculum early. This is not flexible!

THE VEP is a four week program from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon each day. Students in the regular program review the fundamentals and focus on reading skills, mathematics, handwriting, reasoning skills, study habits, and other skills which contribute to academic success.

Students with any mark in the 70% to 79% or are ranked in the last 5 in their class range may be required to attend the VEP.

  1.  Two ID cards are given to each family for each student.
  2.  Students must arrive earlier than 8:00 a.m. each day.
  3.  The campus does not open until 7:00 a.m. Do not bring students before that time.
  4. In order to leave the school compound, the family member must show the student’s ID card
  5.  The ID card must never be given to the student.
  6.  Any student found holding the ID card will be given a referral.
  7.  Students will not be released from school if the ID is not shown.
  8.  Parents, drivers, or workers who forget the ID card will be asked to return home to bring it.
  9.  If the family does not cooperate with the ID card policy and removes the student from the school without showing the ID, he or she puts the security of all students at risk. The students will never be admitted into the school campus for learning again.
  10.  If the family wants the child to go home alone, the family must sign in the student’s file at the registration time. This cannot be changed later. We will not issue GO HOME ALONE ID’s  after October 1.
  11.  If the family wants to take the child home early, the parent must report to the office and sign the child out. The secretary will give the parent a gate pass that will allow the parent to take the child out of the gate once the site director has approved it.
